I Am Creative - Michael

My Major: Computational Media (CM)

Degree Designator: Co-op

Why I chose my major…

The Computational Media program let me explore the growing field of digital media. Digital media means much more than just video games, a fact that my professors and advisors understand very well. I have professors who enjoy debates about abstract topics, like the definition of "fun". But I also have experience with more concrete subjects like game programming and User Interface design.

My most interesting classes so far…

Japanese, Interactive Fiction, Science Fiction, Abnormal Psychology, Video Game Design, and Software Practicum.

I have learned so much from my co-op experiences…

My experience in and around the video game industry has been a progression of ideas. My work on Superman Returns and NFL Tour gave me insights into the video game industry as it stood currently and provided me with a base to launch off from.

Working on Will Wright's new game Spore showed me what can be done with an idea to create something that no one has ever seen before. But it also requires the help of a talented staff with a drive to deliver something unique.

And my research into the world of Augmented Reality gave me a glimpse into what might be in store for the future of the video game industry. I plan to deliver these insights back into the video game industry and return my experiences tenfold.

My creativity is inspired in many ways…

Ideas can come from anywhere and everything. It may be more traditional sources such as movies, games and books, or more unorthodox ones such as children's activities and observations of everyday social interactions. Some ideas differ wildly from the source they were pulled from. This does not mean they are bad ideas, only that they are unique. And sometimes, all it takes is putting two ideas together to create a third. Ideas are all around us, we just have to make sure we are paying attention.

What would be my dream career after I graduate?

My dream job is designing video games that keep breaking the mold and that inspire others both inside and outside of the video game industry.
