I Am a Force - Quincy
My Major: History Technology and Society (HTS)
What attracted me to my major?
When I first entered Tech my mind was actually set on Architecture because it has been something that I worked so hard for in high school to be able to achieve in college. However, when I got to Tech I realized it was not something that I loved as much as I had thought. I did know I loved education and helping educate people and I also had a growing passion for the field of history. I would find myself watching the history channel at all times of the day and reading every book that I could get my hands on about the subject.
What classes would I recommend within HTS?
I would have to say all of the courses in Sociology because it is so amazing to be able to learn something and see it put into action in everyday life. Also my African American studies courses because it is always great to know about your heritage and where you came from. Professor Amy D’Unger's course made me want to pursue this major and I love her style of instructing. I always knew I wanted to be an educator and Professor D'Unger reinforced this. She knows how to keep the class engaged and interested in every lecture that she gives. I hope to base my teaching style off of hers someday.
Outside the classroom I stay very busy...
I am an athlete. I am a fourth year running back for the Yellow Jackets. I am also an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Student Athlete Advisory Board.
I have also started a non-profit organization called “Teaching for the future” in which I allow young less fortunate kids to be exposed to more then just the poverty that they see around them everyday. I allow them to know that they can make it out of those situations by allowing them to see myself and others that have made it out so that they know that it is possible.
I have a passion for education and inspiring children because...
It actually started because I grew up in poverty in a single parent home with no father. But I had a mentor who was a teacher at my middle school and although he also mentored other children, he made sure that I knew that I did not have to settle for the situation that I was in and I could do better. By him doing that it got me to where I am today. I want to make that same impact on as many kids during my lifetime as I can.
