I Am Strong - Nicole

My Major: Science, Technology, and Culture (STAC), Law Minor

Why I study liberal arts at Georgia Tech...

I am a Georgia native who never considered attending Georgia Tech until my last year of high school after having already been accepted to another Georgia University. Then I discovered my major.

I have always been interesteed in literature and cultural issues, but never had the chance to study technology. This major has really proved to be a wonderful challenge in that I am able to integrate my understanding and interest in culture and communications with current technologies. What I have already learned has given me the skills and drive to start an Avant-Garde Society on campus and helped land me a terrific music related marketing and communications internship this summer!

My favorite part about Georgia Tech...

The best part about Georgia Tech is being in Atlanta! As a liberal arts major, Atlanta is a great city for cultural exposure and experiences, as well as a neverending supply of different restaurants and plays to attend. Although Georgia Tech may not offer a lot in the extracurricular arena regarding arts, Atlanta more than makes up for the void. Students are also working to supply the campus with more arts in activities ranging from fashion, film and media societies to poetry groups and performances.

More extracurricular arts on campus...

I never realized how little Georgia Tech emphasized any of the arts, and since Atlanta is becoming a hub for fashion and culture, I felt that we needed a way to connect with that and burst the GT Bubble effect. So a group of students and I started Tech's first arts society, Avant-Garde. We recently put on a showcase named EclecTech, with performances by GT students. We also plan cool events to bring to Tech in hopes that we can expand our horizons as far as art and creative outlets for the student body.

In addition to my work as Marketing Chair of Avant-Garde, I am a member of the African American Student Union and work with the Black Conscious Summit. Currently I am planning the 2010 Black Leadership Conference.

What I am passionate about...

I am passionate about the spoken word and, more specifically, slam poetry. I wrote my first poem in 2001 and have never stopped since. I used to read a lot, and eventually I discovered that writing was a way to express my emotions creatively and develop an art form that could evolve with me. I enjoy open mics and finding a group of people that are themselves writers, and can provide a constant source of inspiration and guidance.

I would definitely characterize my writng as experimental and socially conscious. Having taken some formal poetry classes, I love to experiment with rhyme schemes, sounds, and rhythm, and sometimes I try out different poets' styles of writing. I am that poet who loves to use taboo topics in my poems, because the things left unsaid tend to be the most important. As a Tech student it is extremely difficult for your brain to produce anything aside from mandatory work, yet I am growing and living everyday...constantly finding new inspiration for poems....

My dream career after graduation...

I actually have always wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry, and in almost every area from fashion show coordination, merchandising, and visual marketing to creative director and fashion editor. After graduation I plan to become an English teacher. I would like to be a creative marketing director and/or fashion editor for a magazine. In the more near future, I hope to start my own clothing and accessory business.
