My Major: Global Economics and Modern Languages (GEML)

My Minor: History

My thought process to declaring a major…

I did not know exactly what to ask for and how to get it in my education when I entered Georgia Tech. I wanted a broad-based "traditional liberal arts education"—whatever that meant—in order to gain a foundation of thinking and learnedness to build upon in any direction in the future. While planning to become a doctor, I view my undergraduate work as the time for me to grow personally and become exposed to all of the great studies that have interested me and which I will want to know more about in the future.

Why did I settle on GEML?

My first economics course I’d ever had (here at Tech, first semester freshman year) introduced me to economics as practical, theoretical, and classical – perfect! It would have been the last thing I’d expected myself to choose, actually. When I looked into declaring my major, to my great delight I discovered GEML. Having had extensive Spanish classes in school, taken nearly 10 trips to Nicaragua, and having a definite affinity for Latin cultures and Spanish language, including Modern Languages in my degree was an exciting addition to my class-load. It helps me to feel that I have a balanced schedule and provides a definite "global" edge to my credentials!

My favorite class so far…

I took History of Modern France because I wanted to explore a little about my French heritage and discovered that the French Revolution is one of the most relevant philosophical occurrences in our history! The class should be a requirement. It really helped with writing skills, also. We watched classic movies, read French novels, and had discussions that made me think more than any other class has.

What extracurricular activities do I particpate in?

I am the president of the Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board. We are a group of leaders within the college who represent our diverse majors, help to provide for the needs of our current classmates, and serve as student liaisons to help administration plan for our future.

Every year since the 10th grade, I have taken two trips a year to Nicaragua with Amigos for Christ, one of Atlanta’s top ten non-profit organizations, to offer services to people in villages surrounding the city of Chinandega. City planning and economic relief programs have challenged me to employ my economics training and my Spanish skills are definitely put to the test! I have developed relationships with this community and seen first-hand the necessities and applications of many concepts from Development Economics.

More recently, I have joined surgical and clinical teams as an interpreter and medical assistant on several trips!

In my free time…

I play and teach piano and organ – it is a consuming hobby which I hope to keep always. I am currently going back to the basics to get my fingers and head into shape, so I am playing a lot of Hannon exercises! Otherwise, I try to play as much Chopin as possible.

I bellydance! I have always loved the music and the mystique, and have taken classes since high school (now I am continuing with options classes at Georgia Tech) but am still clinging to a dream to someday be a performer!
