Our Freshman Seminar

What is GT1000?

The GT1000 Freshman Seminar is a course designed for first-year students. This one-credit graded class assists students in their transition from high school to college. Topics covered include time management, university culture, interpersonal communication, leadership initiative, and major and career development. Students learn how to use campus resources to help with their academic performance, their possibilities in campus life, and preparing for internships and careers. It may not sound like much, but we know that most students who take the course tend to have higher grades than those that opt out, and the majority of freshmen who take it are much more involved in campus organizations and community life.

What is Ivan Allen College's version of GT1000?

The Ivan Allen College offers a special version of GT1000 to entering IAC majors: all of our sections are taught by full-time faculty, allowing new students a chance to get to know (and be known by) professors whom they will be seeing for the next four years.

Additionally, each class of about 25 students has several Team Leaders—older undergraduates (many of whom were GT1000 students recently) who work closely in small teams of 5-6 freshmen on activities in the class. They are there to provide advice and guidance to freshmen on an even more personal level. Students in the course participate in a variety of in- and outside-class experiences to aid them in both academic and co-curriculum opportunities available to students in their first year and beyond. And, we manage to have some fun along the way

Goals of GT1000

  • To assist students in their transition to Georgia Tech and the Ivan Allen College by providing opportunities for students to develop personal and academic skills
  • To provide opportunities to develop relationships with IAC students, IAC faculty and administrators and the larger GT community
  • To offer instruction and practice in a range of learning skills, time management and organizational skills, and self assessment
  • To introduce students to the many Liberal Arts majors, minors and certificates and provide information on the importance of conducting research and the resources available to Liberal Arts students.
  • To introduce students to the wide array of helpful resources on campus
  • To introduce students to the many leadership opportunities that exist at the Ivan Allen College and Georgia Tech

Hear from the Students!

"One of the best things that I learned in GT1000 was how to write a resume… Another important thing that I learned in GT1000 was all the possibilities open to Public Policy majors after Georgia Tech…"
"After completing my freshman year, I decided that I wanted to be a Team Leader for GT1000 so that I could share with the new incoming freshman all the opportunities and experiences that Georgia Tech offers… The experiences I had through serving opened up new partnerships with professors, new friendships with students, and even showed me new things about Georgia Tech that I had not known."
"I would recommend Team Leading a GT1000 class to anyone who has a passion for Georgia Tech or has an interest in working with first year students."
